Larsen Bay, Kodiak Island
Posted by AlaskanAuthor on Oct 04 2005
"Larsen Bay is among one of the most popular Remote Zone options on the entire island. It rests in a spectacular scenic valley located at the terminus of a stunning narrow fjord on Larsen Bay some 60 miles southwest of the town of Kodiak. It is a traditional Alutiiq settlement that has been inhabited for almost 2000 years. Native residents still practice a subsistence lifestyle and harvest both fish and marine mammals. Their entire economy is based on fishing and the majority of residents hold commercial fishing permits. Tannery and cannery structures from the past still exist here and only lend to the entire charm of the area. Opportunities for the angler in sport fishing are superlative and are ranked among the finest on the island."

That quotation was lifted from my own manuscript. The silver salmon fishing should be most opportune in the rivers during the time you are there. Baited cured eggs will guarantee results if you are a spinner. So will the artificial's of a Pixxe spoon and the fantastic lures made by Tony Davis at Kodiak Custom Fishing Tackle. (check the 'net) Fly guys nail 'em on bright streamers with weight forward sinking tip lines.

Medium heavy is advised for spin, and 9 weight for fly. Kodiak silver's are brutes and can go greater than 15 lbs.

Charter outfits will supply everything if you go out to sea for halibut and other bottom dwellers.

I'm eating my heart out! You have nothing to worry about except the weather...
