Larson Bay
Posted by BrownBear on Oct 04 2005
A lot will depend on where you go after you get there.  Humpy Creek in the middle of town may get a few silvers, but their bellies will be dragging bottom while their backs are sticking out.  Wrecked cars and other junk kind of spoil the aesthetics and interfere with your backcast, too.

If you're going with Larson Bay Lodge, Mike will fix you right up with gear, or at least give advice if you prefer your own.  Same for the other lodges.

Cross Uyak Bay to Browns Lagoon or Zachar River and your silver salmon options improve.  Travel to the head of the Uyak, and things are fine too.  All require a boat or plane.  If you want to go to the head of Larson Bay itself and cross the portage to Karluk River the fishing will be great, but you will have a long walk on your hands getting to the trailhead before making the portage unless you have a ride.  You may still want an ATV ride over the portage simply to avoid a 6-mile round trip hike in hip boots and mud.

In none of the locations would I resort to a sink tip line however.  Waters are shallow enough that it may be a liability, while a floating line lets you work from top (Wogs) to bottom (weighted flies) without spool changes.

Duck season opens October 8, and the terrific shooting at Browns, Zachar and the head of Uyak may get a little frustrating if you don't bring along a shotgun and a handful of dekes.
