Delta-Clearwater River
Posted by bakerb on Oct 16 2005
OAC,
The Delta-Clearwater River is spring-fed. Don't kid yourself however, it is about the coldest water you will ever stand in. It will not freeze throughout the Winter (at least the main current).
I would not recommend a prop on the Delta-Clearwater. It has sections that are simply too shallow to keep the prop out of the gravel (this is the voice of experience speaking). I had to replace a prop after the one and only trip I made to the Delta-Clearwater without a jet.
If you are willing to wade aggressively, you can wade fish the Delta-Clearwater from the Campground upstream. This will require several crossings, but the favored hole behind the lodge can be reached this way.
Don't forget to try drifting a few Egg-Pattern Flies behind the spawning Silvers. Some of the largest, fattest, and eager Arctic Grayling in the Tanana Valley can be found in the river this time of year.
Good Luck!
