you could use one to get down stream to the first hard left bend.  There their is usually a formidable school of coho's.  After this going down any farther would be a spell of disaster as has been stated.  Going up stream isn't much better.  We tried this in a 14 footer with a 10hp and a lift.  We didn't get very far at all.   Maybe a couple of miles.  You risk burning up your pump every time you pull the motor out of the water.  

Another idear is to canoe/raft it.  Go down to clearwater lake (a canoe is the better of the two here imho).   The lower river however does chance at freezing over I would be highly suprised at this point if it has.
