Loss of halibut fishing opportunity
Posted by Webmaster on Nov 22 2005
The Alaska Outdoor Council passed along the following message to members and friends.  The message originated with the Alaska Charter Association in Homer, AK.

“If you are one of the 35,000 residents from Southcentral and Interior Alaska (area 3A) who choose to hire a halibut charter every year, or if you’re a resident who might like to catch your own halibut in the future, but you don’t want to buy and store your own saltwater boat, you had best write your letter now to the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council (NPFMC) to rescind the halibut charter individual fishing quotas  (IFQ)..   If you’re from Southeast Alaska and you hire a halibut charter, you’re one of less then 5,000 residents. Already non-residents buy 93% of the halibut charter trips in area 2C. If the NPFMC places a cap on halibut charters will there continue to be an opening for resident fishing people to hire a halibut charter?

The NPFMC will start sign-up for public testimony Wednesday afternoon on December 7th at the Anchorage Hilton regarding the motion to rescind the federal IFQ program for the halibut charter fleet.”

For additional information about problems halibut sport fishermen will face with the IFQs, see the Alaska Charter Association website at < http://www.alaskacharter.org/reasons.htm >

The Anchorage Daily News also provided a good article on the subject: < http://www.adn.com/outdoors/story/7202157p-7113782c.html >
The Alaska Charter Association recommends this message in opposition to the Halibut Charter IFQ

I Oppose the Halibut Charter IFQ.  Please do NOT publish the Halibut Charter IFQ proposal.

Ask NPFMC to rescind the proposal in December.  Give your name, address, and occupation.
