Who invented the canoe anyway?

I'm sorry but I am a canoe hater. I tried it last summer. What kind of a boat just tips over??? I'll never use one again. (of course it didn't help that I had a hyperactive chocolate lab with me). I really can't imagine using one in a river, or worse yet whitewater. That would be just foolish.
Anyone, please don't.
