Dry Ice on the Airlines
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 12 2006
MBB,
You don't want to use dry ice for your fish. The airlines have a per-package limit of five pounds, plus other limits on the total amount per cargo compartment on the aircraft. You also can't tape or seal the lid on the container, because it may blow open from expanding gasses.
Just freeze it really well as was suggested. If you're doing the tourist thing (and it sounds like you are), you might consider dropping it off at Indian Valley Meats (about 20 minutes outside Anchorage) or at Alaska Sausage and Seafood in Anchorage. They'll vacuum pack it and freeze it for you. It's kinda spendy, so check out their website before you commit. Depending on how far you're going, if you pack it tight you should have no problem getting it home in good shape. If you're really concerned, you can get a foam-lined fish box. The added insulation will help a lot. Remember to keep the package weight down under 50 lbs. or you'll be charged excess baggage!
