Aniak
Posted by Danod on Feb 15 2006
Aniak is pretty tricky if you're not a real experienced rafter. Also depends on the weather at the time but I never recommend it to novices. In August you can get rains that will raise the levels quickly and mud it all up - ruins fishing. The lower 10- 15 miles is pretty flat and slow and it can be nice to get a tow to town. A small chain saw is not that outrageous - I've seen more than one rafter or jet boater have one. One year a brush pile blocked the entire channel. We had to run our jet boat through flooded alder brush. Channels change somewhat from year to year depending on runoff. I've also had channels close off on me in 1/2 day as rain raised the water levels and moved snags around. Luckily a new one opened by the time we came back down. The degree of difficulty also depends on where you start. If you start on the Salmon River it can be easier than if you start at Aniak Lake - which some people consider only for the experts. Depends too if a float trip company is using it (Aniak L) regularly and keeping it opened up. It has some narrow water that can be pretty fast. From the outlet of the Salmon to the Buckstock the braiding can be confusing and yes I've found near dead ends but with a motor and aluminum boat we could turn around.

I think the Kanektok offers more reliable salmon fishing.
Have you considered the Goodnews River?
