6 inches
Posted by jrogers on Feb 18 2006
not my biggest, but my shallowest was last summer out of Homer. I hooked one and brought it to the surface. It got off as we were getting ready to gaff it. It was right on the surface, so I decided to try and gaf it anyway (probabily not a legal move) I set my pole on the rail to grab the gaff, and when I did the bait went back in the water. The halibut spun around and took it. I got to feel the classic halibut series of jerks while I watched the fish swinging its head back and forth with the bait in it's mouth. It reset the hook, and I got to bring it home. I figured I should get that one out of the gene pool, since he was dumb enough to take it a second time after being hauled up from 150'.
