FWIW I took my son on a trout/dolly float trip on the Kenai out of Cooper Landing.  We went in late June.  Our 'fly' fishing had us chucking beads with a few ounces of weight attached to the line.  Not exactly what I had in mind when the owner said we would be fly fishing.  Fishing was very disappointing that day.  They sounded very encouraging that we would have great success.  I won't hire a guide when I go back this year.  We were paired up with 2 other anglers.  If you do the float, find out how many people will be in the boat.  I expected a private guide for the 2 of us at that price.  We spent half the time in the deep water while the other side fished towards the banks.  

We had more fun salmon fishing on our own.  We also had a blast hiking back to a few lakes and catching stocked rainbows.  If you can try and do a halibut charter.  That is well worth the price you pay, plus you get incredible scenery on the way out and back.

But either way there aren't words to describe the natural beauty of being at the Kenai peninsula.  Be sure to take lots of pictures.
