Sharks
Posted by Snowwolfe on Mar 06 2006
Although we have yet to land one I have read everything about salmon shark fishing I can lay my eyes on. Most people swear by long stainless wire leaders (8-12 feet)and 12/0 hooks. Judging from what I have read you need a reel capable of holding at least 400 yards of line (600 is better)and it better have a good drag. I will buying a AVET 5/0 soon just for the task. Seems the most difficult aspect it to keep the shark from rolling and most people I talked to are not anchored when they hook up. This allows them to follow the shark.
After watching shark fishing on the Sports channel I would never attempt to bring one in the boat alive. Even trying to gaff one over a 100 pounds looks risky. I do want to keep one just to try the meat but I will make dang sure it is shot a few times and dead as a door nail before trying to haul it in. We have a fishing harness/belt ready to go that will allow us to hold the rod and clip the upper straps to the reel.
Good luck!
