Sharks in PWS
Posted by Mort on Mar 09 2006
I fished sharks with Orion charters from Valdez.  I would highly recommend them.  I gained tremendous knowledge, had a great time, and got about 100 lbs of shark filets.  I plan to take a shot at these from my own boat.

Once we decided to kill a shark, and got it to the boat, Dave shot it with a bangstick.  He got a rope around the tail, and a huge flying gaff in the jaw, tied the fish off to the gunwhale.  Very quickly he gutted it, still in the water - I don't recall anything specific to bleed it, like cutting a gill.  The gutting drained lots of blood, of course.  This also may help keep other sharks in the area.

He left the fish in the water, tied to the gunwhale, until we were ready to go in, then we heaved it into the boat.  Very dangerous given the weight, straining, and slick deck!  Even with a dead shark!

Interestingly, the other sharks - there were many - didn't show any interest in the floating gutpile or the tied-off sharks.  He has a guy at the dock that fileted them, included in the price.  That was worth it too, as there is a section of meat ("dark meat") that is inedible.

I think the knowledge alone was worth the price of the trip.  The experience was awesome, and the meat is wonderful.  Very firm, like swordfish.  Kind of grey colored, like pork, after cooked.

Be very careful if you do this yourself.  If you use a harness attached to your reel, consider some kind of leash attaching the harness to the boat, in case someone goes overboard.  These are heinously strong fish - kicked our butts!
