Unless you can see through the clear ice that the ice is only a couple of inches thick, you are headed for heartbreak. I use an ice house so have no choice, but also use a gas powered auger. The clear ice in an old hole is much stronger than the ice beside that hole. As far as cheap, I see that Fred Meyers has the hand powered augers on seasonal clearance, CHEAP! In fact I was thinking about buying one to bolt onto the bottom of an electric powered auger I use...
