Clear Ice is BAD!
Posted by Jktimm on Mar 18 2006
To save you hours of bad experience, please avoid the temptation to use old ice holes. Unless you can see through the clear ice that the ice is only a couple of inches thick, you are headed for heartbreak. I use an ice house so have no choice, but also use a gas powered auger. The clear ice in an old hole is much stronger than the ice beside that hole. As far as cheap, I see that Fred Meyers has the hand powered augers on seasonal clearance, CHEAP! In fact I was thinking about buying one to bolt onto the bottom of an electric powered auger I use...
Good Luck!!
