I'm old enough to remember BA (before augers). All we used then was an ice chisel and they are still available. It takes dedication to chisel a new hole through 4 or 5 feet of ice, but they sure are great at opening up a previously drilled hole. Make sure you put a loop of rope at the top and attach it to your wrist. They do get slick, sometimes.
