Posted by Frank from NM on Mar 23 2006 I'm planning a trip to The Great Land in August, 8 - 18, and will mostly be fishing for silvers and reds (with a one-day halibut charter to be sure I bring some fish home!) This is my first trip, and I confess I'm still learning, and probably will be throughout the planning, prep, and the trip...and onwards after that! In either case, I would like to get some recommendations on rod length...whether I should get 6', 6.5', 7' or 8', looking at fishing with spinning gear. Reels already bought, Penn 5500 (after some great recommendations, thanks folks!). I know that a graphite is best, and I'm doing my best to find something affordable on ebay, etc. I'm certainly not rich, by any stretch... So, I sure can't go out and buy the absolute best at the highest price. Ugly Stiks? Rhinos? I guess the best advice is to pick something that is of reasonably high quality, without breaking the bank, but need recommendations on length! First mistake - I bought one on ebay, recommended for 20 - 40# test line, medium to heavy, made by Rainbow xenon XRS, in China - what a piece of JUNK! First trip out to a local pond, hooked a carp that probably wasn't over 5 lbs., and the thing snapped - in THREE pieces! Glad it broke here and not on the Kenai or Resurrection Bay with a 20# silver on the end. Thanks for advice! Next: Rod length buzby Mar 23 2006 Message Thread:
