Rod length depends on where you will be using the rod. The charter will provide you with one. If you plan on snagging from the beach I would get something in 6.5-7 range. If you are casting I would go with 8' or better.
That being said you can pick up a decent Ugly Stik combo at Walmart in Anchorage that will work just fine without spending too much money. If it does break (not likely in the short amount of time you are here)then you can take it back and get a new one or a refund. If you want something that will last a few years for return trips then I would invest in a G-Loomis hot shot. Its spendy but guaranteed a life time and probably won't break.
If you are here for the derby I truly hope you catch a 30lb silver. Just as long as mine is 21lbs. (joke).
