Wow, that was fast!

As always, I can count on people to quickly post replies on this site!  And, I am also quite glad that I posted this question.  Up to now, I had been thinking that a 6' rod would probably be adequate, but the replies certainly make me think longer would be better.  Think I'll now look at something NO LESS than 7'. I'm not sure about transporting them on the plane as a carry on 'personal item', though.  Shoot - an 8'in two pieces is still 4'.  Dang airlines and their rules!  And, I can't seem to get them to really give me a straight answer about what I can/cannot bring carried on to the plane.  That's another issue.  Again, folks - thanks!!!
