Reels
Posted by alaskanfishguides on Mar 25 2006
The 6500 C3 is very light for July kings on the Kenai.  It is possible that you could land one or it is possible that the fish of a lifetime might cause this reel to self-destruct!  I use this very reel for silver fishing in the fall.  The advantage of this reel is the mag brake which really helps avoid backlashing of the spool.

For my clients, I use the Shimano TR2000D (Charter Special; on sale at Cabelas for $120).  Very sturdy reel, great retrieve ratio 4.2:1 (lower is better) and plenty of line capacity.  It doesn't have a mag brake however, which can cause a bit of grief.

Cabelas sells the TLD 15 (similar design) for $130.  This will hold 450 yds of 20# (I use 30#) mainline with a 4:1 gear ratio... lower ratios with the TLD 20 (3.6:1).

The Ambassadeur 6500 C3 has 5.3:1 ratio and only 245 yds of 14# line capacity.

For kings on the kenai, your best bet is the TLD or Charter special from Shimano in my opinion.

By the way, many guides are using the Penn reels as well as the Diawa.
