learning time
Posted by martentrapper on Mar 25 2004
I'll assume by "bush" pilot you mean someone who does alot of off airport work. You are in for a long, expensive ride, ghost. It will take a couple thousand hrs, I think, and alot of off airport practice to be safe and competent. Probably will take you that much time in your flight log to get a job also.
You asked about pay. You'll be fortunate to get 30 bucks an hr as a pilot for a guide or lodge biz. That will be for flight time, not time on the ground. I imagine some places pay a salary, if your a known, experienced pilot.
It is actually easier to become a guide, and cheaper, then to become a bush pilot. You will almost certainly need to have your own plane to get the experience needed to be a "bush" pilot. I doubt any outfit will rent the type of plane(cub) for the type of practice and time building you will need. You might be able to rent a float plane to gain bush experience.
There are plenty of off airport pilots around alaska. Some are as good as anyone ever was. Alot of them are unknowns, average joes who just happen to be good at something, even tho they don't do it for a living.
I suggest you get an asst guide license. Find work for a guide and spend time around some experienced off airport pilots. You'l learn more there than asking questions here.
So Kodiman......what sort of planes are these guys flying that consider 200 ft long?
