Chicken
Posted by Diablo on Mar 31 2004
Last year was my first hunt for caribou.  2 or so years ago, the caribou were all over chicken.  I went to chicken for opening day last year, using an ATV to travel approx 30 miles back.  The trails are in pretty good condition in my opinion, I saw a lot of people on the side of the trail fixing problems with ATVs, so have a basic repair kit.  I also recommend traveling with a friend, if yours breaks down he can at least transport you out of there.  TONS of traffic.  Any hunt easily accessable will be like that.  We kept going until we passed about everyone.  When I glassed east I saw tarps and tents and ATVs on every hill and ridge, when I looked west I saw nothing.  But the bou weren't there yet, with the exception of some small pockets, that I didn't see.  I saw a hand full of people with bou in the wagon.  I did not see bears either, I had the same hopes as you.  I was told that the bears would be located near the bou, follow the food I guess.
Bottom line, if the bou are there then your chances are pretty good, if not well then you are in for a wait.  only course of action at that point is to drop trailer at camp, use extra gas to travel further west.  There are a lot of unimproved trails or creeks you can travel on, but I recommend dropping the trailer then.  I was out there for 4 days total.  I hope that success rate would improve if you stayed longer.  Tok ADFG office has a caribou hotline that is pretty accurate for center of mass herd location.
I had most of my buddies get their bou on the steese side, going in around Central.  All depends on the herd.  Good luck, I got mine on the North Slope.
