Chisana
Posted by northway on Apr 02 2004
Living in the area, I can tell you that floating the Chisana, if for moose, is one of the poorest choices.  Unit 12 has a really low moose population.  The numbers may look decent, but they are in areas that are pretty much inaccessible.  Now if you are looking for a grizzly, floating the Chisana might be the ticket.  Floating from Chisana, the river will be braided into many channels.  Once you get down to the mouth of Scotty Creek, it comes into on and pretty much stays like that until Northway.  This lower section is SUPER slow.  If you do it, have a motor.  If the wind is blowing up the river, you will not be coming down!  Good bird hunting along the river for ducks.  It is nice country, but like I said the upper river is hunted by a guide and the moose population is low.  The lower half of the river is hunted hard by locals year round, so finding an animal in that section would be a lucky find.  If you do it, please shoot any wolves or bears you may run into.  The moose will thank you.
