Small boats and Big water
Posted by Mkay on Apr 04 2004
I was probably a bit unkind with my earlier comments. Let me modify them. I have run a 12.5 ft Achilles out of Valdez numerous times and been able to find a hiding place easily, but I don't go much farther than Sawmill/Jack Bay. What works safely in Valdez has little margin for error in other areas, say, Seward, where if the wind and sea pick up you have no safe place to hide. I have seen nice weather forecasts turn bad around Pigot Pt. I also came close to meeting my maker in a particularly hideous storm in none other than Eshamy lagoon one October evening, so I have a rather unnatural fear of the water out of Whittier.

Previous: possible, but you would have to know what you are RobR Mar 31 2004
Next: Whittier Arcticwildman Mar 31 2004
