Great Question
Posted by wolverine on Jan 20 2005
Good hunting books are one of my favorite subjects.

I have read every recent book published on alaska that I know of and many of the old ones...

The best (most good, detailed info) all around how to book on alaska is Confer's.

Chris Batin's, although it could use an update, is also an excellent resource especially for non alaskans planning a hunt.

I believe Bartlett  has some good specific info on a few hunt areas(mostly northeast interior) but think he is a much better salesman and gear designer than author.

Tony Russ is my favorite current Alaskan how-to author His sheep and bear books are really good. Gear reccomendations are super detailed and spot on.

Gilchrest's sheep and goat hunting books are also good, solid info and good stories.

Local Guy Bob Robb (Eagle River, I think) has become one of the best overall especially in article length work.

Boddingtonis the best on modern hunting guns.

Jack O'Connor is timeless.  Russell Annabell tells many of the best early alaskan stories.

Frank Glaser's story told By Jim Rearden in alaska's wolf man is also a great alaska story.

I also love old stories of guides in the copper river valley and on kodiak such as marvin clarks stories of pinnell and talifson.

I think flatwater hit the nail on the head with Young's Alaska-Yukon Trophies won and lost.  this is my favorite all-time alaska hunting story.

As a whitetail bowhunting fanatic in a former life I have to mention Gregg Miller, an old Wisconsin boy like me, and authority on hunting White-tails in the mid west.

Zumbo Is the undisputed king of Elk and for good reason.

Teddy Roosevelt's Death in the Long Grass is one of the all time best, but all of his works from early, pre presidency HuntingTrips of a Ranch Hand to his later books as a President in africa are more than worth the read.

The book I "read" the most ,  DeLORME's Alaska Atlas&Gazateer I don't think I'll get many arguments on this one, if you don't have one, there's something wrong with you, if you can't find one, you live in a hole.

So much for my "Short List"
