Deer
Posted by Phil on Apr 08 2005
I concur - a deer hunt is a great way to start. If you don't want to take your son out of school, deer season on Kodiak starts in August. You have to climb some but that shouldn't be a problem.

The 243 is enough gun for caribou so that is also a possibility. There is a registration hunt that includes the Chicken Ridge trail just west of Chicken. It requires using a 4-wheeler but doesn't (or didn't) require drawing for a license. The best deal there (in my opinion) is to camp so you don't have to ride 30 miles every day. Hunting success seems to vary from year to year.

Hope this helps.
