Very good post Mark. Thanks. Middle ground is important. I too hope we can find it some day. I agree we have good biologists and they are doing the best they can. Perhaps your right, the intensive management law should be changed. If for no ther reason, the entire state is practically going to be under that law with respect to moose in a few years. We probably can't afford intensive management and predator control over 70 % of this state, or more. Imagine the problem if a couple caribou herds crashed as well.
While I somewhat agree that management should not be about short term goals, isn't that what we are stuck with? Even a plan for a 50 year period would be short in respect to ecological time (how's that for creating phrases homerdave?). How can humans, who only work for 20 or 30 years, formulate and carry out a plan that would survive multiple generations and political elections?
I think most Joe bubba hunters want the same thing. Their own little spot where they can hunt and have a decent chance at success. I have a hard time faulting them for that. Even you, Mark, have asked, both on this forum and Larry's, to have your own special spot where no one else hunts. Whether joe bubba, or you, understand ecosystems and biology seems to me to be less important than the fact that we all want the same thing. Hopefully we can find that middle ground someday and use it to everyones advantage.
Best to you too.
Mike
