While the 7-08 is great for things like deer and maybe elk, the 308 has a far greater advantage on larger game due to bullet weight. Remember- the case is the same except for the angle of theneck and diameter of bullet used. The powder capacity is the same as well as dynamics within the case. The only real variable you have toward recoil is bullet weight/diameter. Heavier bullets are far more important than the minimal recoil difference felt.
