your best bet would be to keep driving north until you start seeing decent numbers of caribou - could be galbraith lake, maybe not till slope mtn, maybe not till pump 2, then do your 5 mile hike.  If you aren't seeing decent numbers of animals along the road, you are taking a huge chance of walking 10 miles minimum (roundtrip)just for fun (thats allot of walking in that tundra).  Where they will be that time of year is primarily determined by the weather - if its warm/hot and buggy they will be near or on the coast.  If its cool/cold they tend to be closer to the mountains.  you won't know till you get up there really.  good luck.
