Every situation is different

Big27,

Yes it was necessary to shoot AT this bear.  I would have been mauled if I hadn't.  It all happened so fast.  Otherthings that I remember about the incidet were 1) my scope covers never got flipped up...I was shooting out of instinct.  and 2) I saw the muzzle fash from the barrel.  It was that close that if I aimed at all it was directly down the barrel.  This bear was so close that if time had been frozen, I would not of had to take a step to pet the furry creature.  I wasn't shooting to kill this bear, I was shooting AT the bear to prevent myself being killed.

I take total accountability and resposibilty for using a caliber that is less than adequate for bear.  On the flip side of it, I'm still here to talk about it.

Later, D
