So Where IS the Mulchatna Caribou Herd?
Posted by Buck Nelson on Oct 02 2005
When I hunted the Mulchatna Herd in 1988, my dad, brother and I weathered a fierce windstorm that flattened one of our two tents and was accompanied by a 4" driving rain. The good news is we saw caribou, plenty of them, and bagged three big bulls.

Obviously, the situation for this herd has changed. Numbers are way down, and they are largely absent from many of the areas traditionally hunted.

Still, however, there are tens of thousands of caribou in that herd, and thousands of big bulls. SOMEBODY must be finding them. I know I saw hundreds of caribou, including some nice bulls, when I floated the Goodnews River in 2002.

Where HAS the herd been during hunting season in the last two years? What has been the best departure point? (Dillingham? Bethel? Iliamna?) I know there are air taxis that have done poorly, but what air taxis have done well recently?
