fictious (has-been) herd
Posted by Byron_Lamb on Oct 02 2005
Greetings Buck,

I really doubt this will be some big revelation, however; respectfully, you're using terms that are no longer applicable.

I got a good laugh when you mentioned something to the affect of "where is THE herd"? Guess what...they didn't dig a hole to hide in, they're gone. THE Mulchatna herd was NEVER one big herd, more accuratley said, several years ago a person could see many groups of several thousand each, not "THE HERD".

If anyone thinks there is a bunch of Caribou hiding somwhere, wating for ALL the hunters to end the season and them magicially appear somehwere, you're fooling yourself. Maybe we should all go look for some $2.00 per gallon gasoline, yea, we all remeber them days, and it wasn't that long ago, but it ain't that way anymore!

"Tens of thousands of Caribou"? Maybe,..... however this herd is spread over a VAST area of Western Alaska now. This means there is no longer large masses seen in any one area - at one time.

A bunch of big bulls somehwere? Once again this is fiction. Not only is there NOT a bunch of big bulls ANYWHERE, its darn hard to find ANY mature bull associated w/ the Mulchatna herd.

My family and I have lived in this area long enough to see the rise & fall of our Caribou herd. As Caribou herds do, its a good bet that sometime in the future this herd will once again re-bound. In the mean time any serious Caribou hunter should be considering other options.

Good Hunting...>Byron Lamb
