It's a fair question
Posted by Buck Nelson on Oct 02 2005
You're right Byron, it wasn't a big revelation. I think we’re all aware that the Mulchatna Herd doesn’t travel as one group, and I think I made it clear that I was asking where the remaining animals have been found during the last two hunting seasons.

The term “Mulchatna Herd” is still used, and I expect it will continue to be used for the foreseeable future. I don’t think there were any other terms I used that are “no longer applicable.”

I just looked up the last population estimate for the herd, and it was 85,000 animals, with a bull/cow ratio of 21/100, which was a slight improvement. The calf/cow ratio was 20/100.

That would mean there are about 17,000 bulls in the herd, and that would mean there are a lot of good bulls out there somewhere, even if they are harder to find. And that was my question: where are the best areas for the Mulchatna Herd now?

I do agree Byron, that serious "trophy" caribou hunters should probably take a hard look at other herds before deciding to hunt the Mulchatna Herd.
