There may be more recent info than what I have, but my understanding is that Motorola has more satellites in our neck of the woods than GlobalStar, therefore the Motorola Irridium system offers better coverage in Alaska than GlobalStar.  I was able to confirm this with a GlobalStar representative at the SCI national convention in Reno last January.

Not that this stuff always works as advertised; you're not supposed to be able to call an aircraft with a radio unless it's line of sight, but I've done it on clear days over mountain ranges before.  Still, general concepts generally hold true.  I'd stick with Motorola pretty much anywhere in Alaska.
