[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] good watchdog hard to beat Posted by bushrat on Oct 08 2005 Been around dogs for over twenty years, and one good bear dog is priceless in camp for early warning and even scaring off bears. But not all bears will run from a barking dog, some will just stand there, others may try to eat your dog if you have it chained (while you are gone). I highly advise NOT leaving your dog in camp alone on chain while you are gone. If you have a good dog familiar with the bush that can run free during the day and still be in control, then I'd say to bring him or her along. Not only do they make great watchdogs at night but they are a joy to have around for the most part for companionship. I've been awakened in the middle of the night many times by dogs barking at bears coming into camp. Or wolves. Or porcupines. Or squirrels. Obviously, continuous barking at a squirrel isn't what you want...it just takes the right dog. Previous: dogs in camp Kirk Oct 08 2005 Next: dogs BrownBear Oct 08 2005 Message Thread:
