I've packed in near Yellowstone a few times and the outfitters there all seem to have a few border collies.  The camp cook said he'd rather be left in camp without a gun than without a dog.   They'll wake you up if a coyote or anything else that ticks them off comes around camp, but they've got a special howl when grizz shows up.
