Iridium got a signal first time, every time, worked fine with text messaging, calls, etc. Globalstar got a signal sometimes and sometimes not, and sometimes you'd be talking with a great signal only to lose the signal the next minute. This was due to the mechanics of the system, as Acadinak mentioned; Globalstar phone, sat and ground station must have line of sight to each other to make the call, unlike Iridium where the sats themselves (which there are also more of than Globalstar sats by the way) have crosslinks to each other so if you have one sat in view (and there are enough so you should always have one in view) it can communicate to others in the constellation to complete your call. Think the current closest Globalstar ground station is around Calgary and that causes line of sight problems. If a new one is going in at Wasilla that should solve that problem. In our use, Globalstar did have superior voice quality, when you had a signal, in my opinion. Of course you have to have a signal to worry about voice quality!!
