.338-good gun
Posted by Byron_Lamb on Oct 09 2005
Greetings,
I carried a .375 H&H for a good many years. The .375 hits like a sledge hammer, however gravity start to take over bad after about 150-200 yards. The .338 also hits like a sledge hammer(slightly smaller hammer), but the average hunter, in field conditions, can consistently have more yardage options; shoot farther-more accurate.
The .300 is also a great caliber, very fast-long, but don't hit very hard.
A few years ago I had a guy build me up a nice little .338 Win mag. This gun has a 20" barrel, small Kahles "magnum" scope, made from stainless w/ a great "plastic" stock, and other custom work that works for my application. Of all the guns I have my disposal, I grap the .338 everytime.
Keep in mind that you can go anywhere in the world, walk up the counter at some sporting goods store and ask for a box of .388 shells. What happens next? They throw you a fresh box of ammo.
Some of these "new" short caliber are great, however only time will tell if they're a pssing fad or not.
At any rate, the .338 is a GREAT caliber. Plus there are other factors that make it an obvious choice.
