I know just enough about both to be dangeous since I was also the top ranked wireless equipment analyst on the street for many years. Without getting into all the other debates about air interface, ground stations, business strategies, etc, let me say that the closer you get to either polar ice cap, the less reliable your Globalstar phone will be because every system design has a trade-off due a host of factors including costs. In the case of Globalstar, it was coverage on the polar ice caps. In fact, if you go to the Globalstar web site you can look at the coverage map and verify all this information. I've tried both up there and had no problems with eiher though the Iridium phone generally had no problem locating a satellite immediately while the Globalstar would take quite a bit more time.
