1st hand experience
Posted by homerdave on Oct 10 2005
the outfitter i work for uses cabelas tents, mostly because he gets a good deal on them. i have had them in some pretty good storms, but  certainly not  the worst alaska can offer.  as mike points out, you could use one for years and never have a problem, but you could use one for two weeks and have it self-destruct in one awful storm.
the 4 man "guide"  model is the biggest i would recommend (with reservations). anything bigger is gonna catch too much wind. get aluminum poles, if a fiberglass pole fails it will take the tent with it due to sharp broken ends, whereas an aluminum pole may bend and your tent will flatten, but at least you will still be inside :-)
the XWT tents are a little better, but after one windstorm last year  i noticed a fly that had nearly chafed through where it wore on the pole, and had it blown another few hours it certainly would have failed.
no matter what, use EVERY tie out  there is, and check the tension on the lines daily. constant wind will inevitably loosen the guy lines.
personally i think cabelas tents are overpriced for the materials and workmanship (unless you are getting an outfitters discount ;-)) and though they may have a great warranty that will do you no good if your tent fails when you need it most
for years my personal tent was a northface mountain tent, this year i used a TiGoat tipi and had no complaints. it was nice to have a warm dry place to hang out, but the worst weather we had was only 35-40 kts  with heavy rain for 10 hours, hardly a real torture test.
