Fortunately I have not yet had bear trouble. I had hoped he would alert me to any bear problems, but I can tell you on long hikes he basically faceplants into the floor of the tent and I have to drag him if I want him to move. And hes a young lab. On such hunts a herd of elephants could walk through camp and he wouldnt know it. A few years ago my dad was camped along a river and a bear pushed in the side of his tent and swatted it open. His lab laid there frozen with fear while he yelled and punched the bear which then ran away. So you cant always count on help from the dog while you are sleeping. On the other hand my coworker swears his two part wolf huskies would routinely run off brownies from his house in Prince William Sound so a dog may offer some protection around camp or while hiking. Personally I take my dog hunting because I have no other choice, but I could see a dog causing bear trouble if it ran after a bear and you had to defend it. I keep him on a leash whenever I am around other people or see wildlife to prevent such problems.
