Elitists?
Posted by Michael Strahan on Oct 10 2005
I usually stay away from the political stuff, but a thought occurred to me on this one.

If we allow ATV use up there, aren't we creating an elitist hunt available only to those with ATVs?  You know, not everyone can afford a machine and a trailer.  Think of what will happen to the poor sucker who finds himself afoot in the middle of a network of ATV trails!  It's already a circus, with people shooting over the top of others, etc.  Wouldn't this effort effectively assert the rights of one group over another?  I think so.  Granted, not everyone is in good enough shape to hike in and out of there with a caribou on their back, so I guess it's "exclusive" already.  But for crying out loud; this seems to go too far.

No matter what we do, someone will lose out.  In cases like that, I think we should default to what's best for the environment.  It seems to me that tearing the place up with trails, leaving trash around, fighting for parking places, impeding the flow of commercial traffic to the slope, and the negative dynamics this will have on the caribou population; these are not things I want to see happen.  But if we do this, they will.  Then we'll be just that much closer to this becoming yet another special permit hunt.  Is that what people want?

No matter what we do, some groups will lose out.  I guess I'm not a big fan of tearing up the land a lot more (and we all know that will happen) just so folks incapable of doing the hunt right now can have an easier hunt.  Is this the sort of press we want?  Where will everyone park?  Will the state then become obligated to develop parking lots, rest room facilities and campgrounds up there to accomodate the hordes that will decend on the area?  Folks, I think this road was developed for the purpose of serving the oil field.  I could be mistaken, but its use as a recreational corridor was a secondary consideration.  I'm afraid with the present infrastructure in place, a move like this will be a disaster.

If it makes it to the ballot, I'm voting "no".
