How About Simply Equal Access?
Posted by Mark on Oct 13 2005
When the Dalton Highway Corridor was created in law, which prohibited all motorized vehicle use off of the surface of the highway, everybody was required to comply.

In July, 2000, transportation law was changed to allow snowmobile travel through the corridor IF that travel began outside the corridor (on one side or the other). In other words, snowmobile travel was allowed only for local residents, but if you hauled your snowmobile up there from the south, you were still prohibited. This passed both houses of the Legislature WITHOUT A SINGLE NO VOTE, 59-0 (one absent vote).

That fall an emergency supplement proposal was added to the BOG agenda which would allow hunting via a snowmobile under the same conditions; if the snowmobile travel does not begin or end within the corridor. And this occurred AFTER the public comment period.

So, what's wrong with allowing ALL Alaskans to use snowmobiles within the corridor? No environmental damage there.

Here's why it ain't kosher:

Because it would end the special privilege. And THAT'S the REAL problem with hunting access among fellow hunters in Alaska:

"I've got mine, and to Hell with the rest of you."
