Equality DOES Have Wings, And It's Flying Away
Posted by Mark on Oct 13 2005
"....in the end equal access for all (whether snowmachine or atv) will become a draw or Tier or permit hunt because when you have a road that cuts right through a nomadic wildlife population's range, as does the Dalton, the herd can't withstand the continued hunting pressure. Do you disagree with that?..."
Nope.
"...And if not, then maybe you want equal access for all, but with the caveat that this comes with a Tier/permit/draw hunt?..."
If that's what it takes, yes.
With that said, I dislike Tier II hunts (even though I'm a regular beneficiary) because they're just as exclusionary as the Dalton Hwy. Corridor snowmobile snafu.
If there must be a limited hunt, do it with registration or drawing permits.
"..."I've got mine and to hell with the rest of you" isn't what this is about. Not at all. For many it's more like this: "I want mine now, regardless of what it does to the herd, the land, or the water, because that is my constitutional right as an Alaskan!..."
As you might be able to tell from my previous statement about the Tier II program, I'm not counted among the many.
"...I had fun being an idealist in my younger days..."
Not me. People didn't listen then, and they still don't. It's frustrating.
By the way, you're talking Idealism. I'm talking Equality.
And, my younger days have been long gone. This has nothing to do with ideals or youth.
"...If SB 85 was just about snowmachine use, we'd be having a different argument, as per above, about what kind of pressure a caribou herd could withstand, what constitutes fair chase etc. But this isn't just about snowmachine use, as you know..."
Correct, and I agree. Although I believe that a few allowed motorized vehicle trails to get through the Corridor can be set up, IT NEVER WILL. Even snowmobile access equality is too much to ask.
"...You can make it out to be about "equality," but things aren't equal now in various gmus(controlled-use, non-res vs. res regs, Tier and permit-only, etc.)..."
I disagree. For example, in the Susitna Flats State Game Refuge, where motorized vehicle use is prohibited, EVERYBODY is subject to that restriction. NO EXCEPTIONS BASED UPON YOUR ADDRESS, OR ANY TRICKY LAWYER LANGUAGE THAT ACHIEVES THE SAME AFFECT.
"...Your argument leads one to ask the question: "Should we then do away with all the Controlled-Use areas in the state because they inhibit equality for all users?..."
That question doesn't make sense. It's equal because WE ALL are restricted EQUALLY.
I understand that a rural resident may have difficulty understanding this concept, but maybe someday the light may come on.
"...How far are you wanting to go with equality?..."
All the way.
That's equality.
