Those are the fact where the majority of hunters are BOWhunters with a extreme minority of them being rifle hunters. Numbers should have shown a fairly signifigant spike in these past two years with the charter operators out off of the ivishak dumping pile on top of pile of people most shooting there 2 animals and leaving.
FK,
anadromous, here in lies one problem, go east, go west and you'll run into an anadromous species of fish not far from the road. Only west leaves a remote option of getting out past the five miles however will cut you short at the itkillik! That is however if it is illegal to cross a anadromous fish spawning river.
Lets talk Nelchina for a minute. I've lived in Alaska 9 years now. So far I have seen ZERO nelchina tags! I also know of NO ONE whose drawn one. Hmm, sounds like a comparison I'd bet a new hunt off of. Draws are nice but like tier II hunts are about worthless for the average person who draws NOTHING on a yearly basis! Registraion is an idea that even I would humor (though I dont have an ATV at my disposal). However there are some interesting facts that have been proven in the past and will continue the uneducated in years to come. Prediciting herd numbers anything more then at it's current level is a practice in voodoism. Next, more relative to Alaska then the midwest where I spent my younger years at, move those animals away from a specific area and you can bet your bottom dollar hunts are going to become tighter, more restrictive or shut down all together. Again using your famed and educational nelchina herd how far must one go before he can find animals, right now that distance is solely relative to herd movements in a fairly stable environment, throw in the typical nature of your average 4 wheeler owner and those movements are about as likely as picking the winning lotto ticket. Again you dont have to look farther then the rex trail, taylor or steese highways to see this, that is if you care to look through a clear glass window and not a painted pictorial of what one may envision.
Next if it's mailers you want, that's great. We can threaten people, can even attempt to fine a few. But again in the long run with only ONE trooper in this hole area (based on the south side of the brooks to boot), enforcement of this "threat" of being fined is about as hopeless as seeing .99 for a gallon regular unleaded.
I'd love to hear from all kinds of people on the issue. The ironic thing is the people who spoke up at the meeting were 98% unanimous to vote down this "bill". Why take for granted the experts of the situation without looking for biased bi partisian groups to "get my cake and eat it too". I love my piece of the pie but there comes a time when that pie is gone or I am just to plum full to eat it! Don't be greedy, you have the hunts in your hands. Are you afraid Jack just might know something here or keep you from getting "your" way? pitty pitty, and being a sheep guy here I thought much more higly of you fk!
Next lets talk access, have you thought about an airboat? hmm, airboats over tundra in the snow...hmmmmmmmmm Using the sag to get you out the 5 mile corridor anything goes, including your beloved 4 wheelers and sleds. How about taking a boat up the west side, hmmmm, or better yet, float it (and yes there is a way to pull this off which is no more difficult then getting in your car and finding a place to park it.
Now let me back up here one second, are you familiar with the environmental impact of sled trails over the tundra placed over time. Hmm something we might consider, something you might want to look into. That's all that needs to be said from me about that. Now dont get me wrong I love sleds just like the next guy but again opening these things up we need to look into the worst possible situation to come up with the best possible answer. That about comes out to be some kind of common sense...shew Again, these studies have been done and are out there for the taking, look!
If it wasnt for bowhunters to begin with there would be NO hunting on the haul road past the yukon river bridge. This was also part of the legistlation of the time. Glad we got it open, now go find your own sand box to play in and don't ruin mine you big bully ;).
