Follow up on the Kotzebue Caribou Hunt
Posted by shawnhastoworkaol.com on Oct 17 2005
This year we went for Caribou but in previous years we went for Moose as well.  Moose is by drawing now and I think you have to put in for it by December.  We had a party of 4 this year and we all took two Caribou each.  Except for the rain and wind it was a great hunt.  We stayed in our tent at one point for basically 40 hours because the wind was blowing 60 mph and the rain was coming down side ways.  I have to agree this is the worst year for weather that I have seen since I have gone up there.  We didn't have any bear problems but we did see one once during the trip.  We saw a pack of about 8 wolves but we didn't have a wolf tag.  I recommend a wolf tag in addition to your Caribou tags if you go.  The Caribou were more spread out this year in smaller numbers than in previous years as well.  In prior years of hunting there we have seen in excess of 5 - 10,000 animals, this year we saw little groups of 20 - 30 animals and in 5 days saw probably 1000 + animals which wasn't bad, I talked to the biologist in Kotzebue in early October and he said the Caribou were back as normal, it was a late year for them but it was due to the warm weather and the remnants of a typhoon that had hit Japan 3-4 weeks earlier.  I have already booked for the 2006 with Mike for 4 of us.  I think my one friend from Oregon is going to put in for a Moose tag.  Mike stopped in on us after the weather finally lifted to make sure we were still in good shape.  He said he had to take two tents out to two different camps because the tents had be smashed to the ground from the wind.  They were the Cabelas 6 man guide tent.  He traded them out with 2 10 x10 bomb shelters.  We lost about half of our meat on this trip because the un seasonal temperatures hung around 50f the entire trip.  Mike took what meat we had a put it in his freezer at the airport.  We went in on September 13th and came out on the 19th.  I can't think of much more but if anyone has anymore questions feel free to e mail me.  I'll try to keep it short.
Shawn
