Meat situation
Posted by shawnhastoworkaol.com on Oct 18 2005
We actually hunted 5 days, the first day of hunting we shot 6 animals.  We took care of the animals that day and packed 3 back to camp.  The water on the river came up and we couldn't get back across for 3 more days.  The am of the 19th we shot 2 more.  All the meat, good and bad was brought back to Kotzebue.  We brought back 2 capes and 6 sets of horns.  Not only was the rain bad on the meat but the humidity and the birds eating the meat that we couldn't get to.  No meat was lost to bears or wolves though.  The meat back at camp was hung under a tarp and dry and that was fine.  Uusually your right that only being out a few days like that wouldn't be that big of problem but I talked to a few hunters that went with Northern Air trophy and Mavrik and they didn't have any salvagable meat at all but they didn't get picked up until 4 or so days after they were suppose to.  We shipped 100% of our meat home that was good and planned on shipping all 8 caribou home so we were disappointed to lose what we did.
