It's not adding up...
Posted by AlaskaHippie on Oct 18 2005
Sorry Shawn, but it seems to me there are holes throughout your story.
You say you went in on the 13th and came out on the 19th.
You also stated that you "stayed in the tent approx 40 hours"
due to weather. Yet when asked you say you hunted 5 days total.
Even allowing 1/2 days to hunt on drop off/pick-up days you had
6 total days to hunt (1/2 the 13th,14,15,16,17,18,1/2 the 19th).
But that 40 hour comment shortens that to approx 4 days. It's not adding up.
To quote you. "the first day of hunting we shot 6 animals.
We took care of the animals that day and
packed 3 back to camp." No. You did NOT take care of the animals.
You shot them, and got 3 back to camp leaving 3 in the field. Dressing or
starting to dress an animal and then leaving it overnight (much less for 72 hours)
is NOT taking care of it. How far from camp was this?
You again contradict yourself in trying to pass off the blame
as to this wanton waste of game by first stating that
" We lost about half of our meat
on this trip because the un
seasonal temperatures hung around
50f the entire trip."
When Strahan questioned you further your story evolved to
"The water on the river came up and we couldn't
get back across for 3 more days." Now which was it?
The rising waters? The fact that your personal comfort levels precluded
you from leaving camp and retrieving your meat? (In your many "vacations"
to Alaska had you not learned that the weather here can come up fast?) The heat?
Did the antlers come out before or after you "lost" the meat of 3 caribou?
Another quote "Not only was the rain bad on the meat but the
humidity and the birds eating the meat that we couldn't get to."
Why on earth would you drop 6 caribou in one day, across a river
from camp with a storm approaching? Did you get an extended forecast before
heading into the field? Granted forecasts are predictions, but
the remnants of a "typhoon" isn't the kind of front that generally
just descends without some prior warning.
ANother quote "We shipped 100% of our meat home that was good". NO AGAIN.
You shipped home about 75% of the meat you dropped. The rest rotted on the ground.
I've made a few tongue-in-cheek comments in the past about requiring non-res hunters
to be guided for ANY big game up here. Your story has brought the tongue off my cheek.
I didn't catch what state your are from, but maybe you should consider hunting there and
not up here. Dropping six animals in one day without having a plan to PROPERLY care for the meat
(2nd camp near the kill and ferry the meat back to main camp?!) is the epitome of irresponsible,
and in my opinion UN-ETHICAL hunting practices. "Well hell bubba, there's thousands of caribou up
here, who cares if we only salvage HALF the meat? Oh, didja grab the antlers? Good!"
I've lived here my entire life, and this year we WON'T have Moose in the freezer.
We COULD have, I had a nice bull dead to rights at 40 yards, but it was @ 30 mins till dark,
we where too far from camp (on foot, 3 miles from camp. And we'd hiked 5 miles into our usual
camp) to ensure we'd be able to salvage it all before a bear or the elements got it.
So I and my partner passed on the shot. I can live with that decision MUCH better than if we had
dropped the hammer and lost most of our meat in the field.
MT. Before ya jump all over this let me state that I respect and acknowledge your opinion.
If you don't feel the same about mine, such is life. But it's mine, and I feel entitled to it.
Guys the number to ADF&G's SafeGuard Program is 1 - 800 - 478 - 3377
I'll be making the call on this one. It's a resource. And if you live here it is OUR resource, and allowing ANY hunter be it resident
or Non to show this type of disregard for Alaska's resources should NOT be tolerated.
Sorry if this offends, but MAN this kind of tap dancing around what in my opinion is wanton waste REALLY burns me up.
