How to Avoid
Posted by rost495 on Oct 18 2005
I think for all of us that are reading and trying to learn... . a bit of info from the folks that know would be a good aside to this thread.

Only bou I've ever shot was across a creek and 3.5 miles from camp.  We gutted, drug down the mountain, skinned, caped, quartered, hung meat in game bags in a tree(lucky) and covered with a tarp for the nite.  It took us till 1 am to get back to camp with nothing(don't ask why as I don't think either of us were thinking clearly at that point).

Without a tree we'd have made some type of rack etc... and then hung and covered with tarp to the ground, preferably in the alders etc... IE shade.

I did not have citric acid with me that trip. Next trip the mesh game bags will all be pre soaked in it and I'll have some crystals for spraying also.

Can I salvage the meat??  I'd like to think so barring anything unforseen.  And had the creek come up, the meat would have been there till we could get to it.

Other advice for some of us that are just reading would be very nice.  I totally agree on being careful as to how many, when and where etc...  Yet next trip in 2007 we will be like last trip.  Totally prepared to simply take care of meat as needed and camp right in that area overnite if required without any troubles.  My siltarp is always nestled in the bottom of my pack with a light sleeping bag and an MRE or freeze dry and stove and power bars.

We do owe this to the resource if nothing else.  And I do love the regs on not removing the antlers till the last load.  At least in theory it helps.

Best, and looking forward to more comments...... I still see that 65 inch?? moose in my scope that was 3.5 miles from the landing strip..... Have photos through the scope somewhere.  Just too late in the hunt and too far from the strip- thats why 3 relatives and my wife are coming on the next trip :o) Jeff
