15 Yards for PILING ON
Posted by mdhunter on Oct 18 2005
or, I guess it only pays to conduct ourselves like SPORTSMEN when we all do things right??
Not disagreeing with the need to salvage meat, but it sure seems like a more constructive tone could have been used. And speaking as a non-res hunter who has frequented this forum for the last several years, this is MORE DETAIL THAN I'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE, regarding meat salvage? In fact, I don't even recognize a few of the names (I'm sure you've posted many times, just not that I can recall related to meat salvage). Where have all these examples about passing up shots late at night, and handling late-afternoon kills, been when hunters ask for info IN ADVANCE of their hunt?? "Check the forum archives" everyone says....."there's a lot of info that's been posted about this." Well, I've been reading almost every post for the past several years, and this is MUCH more detail than I've found before - where was everybody with the SPECIFICS when people ask for them ahead of time?
But when somebody posts info that MIGHT help someone in the future, or that might serve as a tough lesson learned, everyone comes out of the woodwork to jump on the bandwagon.....come on guys, as sportsmen we can do better than that. If something chaps your ass fine, try to respond in a way that we can learn from.
As for non-res hunters ALL needing a GUIDE (as someone posted) - let me say that I've been on three guided moose/bou hunts in the past 4 years, and if you think having a GUIDE guarantees you anything, you're either high or you've been luckier than many of us. You get many options when you use a guide - only two of which are: 1) someone who takes the regulations very seriously and is very ethical, and 2) someone who knows how to skirt the rules. There are several shades in between, but enlisting a guide guarantees nothing in the form of compliance with regs. I watched F&G in 2002 land in their chopper and ticket hunters for WW, but they never even STOPPED in our camp, even though we were there for 12 days in clear sight, and shot 2 caribou. Why? Because our GUIDED camp was such a piece of crap, I'm sure they figured we were just a bunch of hobos out drinking on the river.
How did my GUIDES do on meat care? Let's just say by my third GUIDED hunt, I brought my own game bags, and once the guide gutted the bull (with my help), I took it from there - bagging, hanging, etc. THAT was how much confidence I had, in the fact that someone cares about meat because it says GUIDE behind their name.
But remember, no badmouthing guides, outfitters, or transporters on this forum......so let's jump on a guy who didn't know any better, and posted honest info that may have raised questions about some things. Didn't know I was the only person on this forum who didn't have a law degree, or take THE RULES OF EVIDENCE in college. Perhaps I'll enlist a lawyer, before making any more posts, to protect myself from any potential liability my words may engender?
Shawn, I hope that you do stick around, to see that this is an atypical thread on the forum.....but if you opt not to, I can't say as I blame you.
Oh, and all you barristers out there? The next time one of us non-resident idiots posts questions in your areas of expertise, I wanna see asses flying over elbows, as you ALL fight to give us GOOD, DETAILED info that we can use - BEFORE we screw up, like you know we will.
