[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] are you part of the problem? Posted by bushrat on Oct 18 2005 I've been hanging meat on the bone after hunting season for over 20years. We have no freezer here in the bush, so all the meat hangs at whatever the outside temperature is until the colder weather of October comes and freezes it solid. I've never "lost" any meat to spoilage, though the crust will get fairly thick on some years of warmer weather. A smudge fire is sometimes helpful to keep the flies off, as are game bags. I once helped a guy jerk most of a black bear under a tarp with alder fire during three days of heavy rain at 55 degrees. If you lose meat to spoilage after six days at 50degrees,AKhunter45, you simply aren't caring for it properly. I don't know what else to tell you on that score. You might read up more on proper meat care if you have been having problems with your own meat. I'd be happy to discuss this with you further if you want, try to find out where you are going wrong with meat care and how to avoid it in future.
