A Rotten Deal-
Posted by Michael Strahan on Oct 19 2005
Hi guys,

Though I'm not responsible for everything that has happened to this thread, I feel terrible about it.  My intention was simply to ask for clarification on what happened, with three purposes in mind:

1.  To find out exactly what happened.

2.  To use this opportunity to stress the importance of proper meat care.

3.  To find a way to support Shawn’s efforts to do the right thing.

It’s clear that my efforts weren’t entirely successful.  In fact, much of this thread has become needlessly ugly and caustic.  Perhaps if I’d not asked the questions, this wouldn’t have happened.

Though some disagree, I think it’s appropriate and even necessary that we talk about these things.  Still, I’m not totally comfortable with discussions like this because they seem to border on an invasion of someone’s privacy.  On the other hand, if someone posts this sort of information in a public forum, aren’t they opening the discussion?  I think that’s one of the purposes of forums like this, isn’t it?  It’s not always an easy question.

There’s been a lot of mud-slinging in this and though I’m not sure how much of it was aimed at me, it really doesn’t matter.  What matters to me is that offense has been taken where none was intended.  For that I apologize.  I’m passionate about proper meat care and though I’m sure Shawn of all people has second-guessed himself a thousand ways already, it’s not my place to tell him he’s a law-breaker or that he doesn’t care about meat care.  I don’t believe I said that, but if I did, I was out of line.  Even after he posted the details, there’s so much that I DON’T know.  I’m impressed at his forthrightness and at the effort he put into salvaging the animals to the best of his ability.  It’s clear that there were circumstances beyond his control, yet he did what he could under those circumstances.  In retrospect should he have built a meat rack?  Should he have placed a tarp over the meat?  Should the meat have been bagged in game bags?  Should he have anticipated that a huge upstream storm would swell the creek to an impassable level?  Is this sort of thing inexcusable?  Should he have quit hunting?  We can ask and answer questions like these all day long and still we have solved nothing if in the process we find that our attempts to communicate have degenerated into venomous attacks on each other.

So at this point I’d like to extend a hearty handshake to Shawn and ask for his forgiveness for any ills I’ve created; real or perceived, and to welcome him here.  Let’s start over.

For the others who might want to fire off another flaming post at someone, I know you don’t want me telling you what to do, but please feel free to send it to me privately.  There’s been enough damage here already.  Let’s move on, okay?

Sincerely,

-Mike
